The Kenmare Pink Ribbon Walk – Sunday May 17th

The Walk

Kenmare is holding its second Pink Ribbon Walk on Sunday 17th May when the whole town will be turning pink once again.

Beginning at the Creamery behind the square in Kenmare, the walk will go through Kenmare’s scenic town centre.  The walk follows a loop starting and finishing at the Creamery and taking in gently undulating hills all the while drinking in the beautiful scenery around Kenmare. 

You may have heard that Kenmare likes to throw a good festival and the Kenmare Pink Ribbon Walk is destined to have a great festival atmosphere.

Kenmare Pink Ribbon is hoping that the event will attract walkers from across the country and that they’ll make a weekend of it.

The route

Kenmare Pink Ribbon Walk route map

The route starts at the Creamery car park and goes out through the Square in Kenmare along sealed roads.  Public toilets are available on the route and there will be plenty of water stops. 

Terrain

The walk takes place entirely on sealed main and country roads.

Start times

Event starts at 1pm

Kenmare Pink Ribbon Walk Starts at 2pm.

Duration

The expected time to complete the 10 km walk will be about 2 hours, and will suit most walkers with reasonable fitness. There will be plenty of water stops along the route. and will suit walkers with an average level of fitness. 

Equipment

Good walking shoes or trainers are recommended. We also suggest that you bring rain gear just in case.

The finish line

All participants will receive a well-deserved medal when they cross the finish line. In addition, there will be catering provided for all participants.

Parking

There are a number of sign-posted car parks around the town of Kenmare but we do encourage you to car-pool where possible.

Volunteering

If you'd like to take part but you don't want to walk we will need plenty of volunteers leading up the walk and on the day of the walk.  You can sign up to volunteer by contacting us directly on 085 850 9829.

-How do I enter?

You can register online or pick up a registration form from Court House, The Square, Kenmare, Co Kerry. Please pay your €20 registration fee in advance. No online registrations will be accepted on the day of the Walk.

-How do I hand in my sponsorship money?

  • the Check-In Event from 2pm to 8pm on Saturday May 16th at the Old Boys' School, Shelbourne Street, Kenmare;
  • the Registration Desk at the Old Boys' School, Shelbourne Street, Kenmare at the following times:
    • 4pm to 8pm Friday May 15th
    • 2pm to 8pm Saturday May 16th
    • 10am to 12.30pm on Sunday May 17th.

Cheques and postal orders should be made payable to Kenmare Pink Ribbon Walk. Please make sure your sponsorship card (with your sponsorship total written on the front) and sponsorship money are in a sealed envelope with your name, race number (the number on the front of your sponsorship card) and sponsorship total printed on the front.

-How fit do I have to be?

It doesn't matter if you are an experienced walker or have never done anything like this before as long as you put in the training. The Walk is designed to be challenging but achievable. There is plenty of time to train and we offer training advice to participants. The Walk is not meant to be competitive; it's all about having fun and experiencing a sense of camaraderie, whilst raising money for charity.

-How much does it cost to take part in the Walk?

The entry fee to take part in the Pink Ribbon Walk is €20 per participant. This non-refundable entry fee covers the administration and all costs of the event (health and safety, insurance, printing, t-shirt, medal etc.). For this entry fee, you will receive:

  • a personalised sponsorship form;
  • an artist-designed Pink Ribbon Walk t-shirt to wear on the day;
  • water along the route;
  • toilet facilities on the route;
  • a Pink Ribbon Walk medal on completion of the Walk;
  • refreshments and entertainment after the Walk.

-How much sponsorship do I have to raise?

Each participant is asked to try and fundraise (in addition to the €20 entry fee) which must be received by the Pink Ribbon Walk by the end of May 2015.

-Where do I get my t-shirt and race number?

  • Collect your t-shirt and race number on the Check-In Day at the Old Boys' School, Shelbourne Street, Kenmare between 4pm to 8pm Friday May 15th or 2pm and 8pm on Saturday May 16th.
  • Alternatively collect your t-shirt and race number on the day of the Walk between 10am and 12.30pm at  at the Old Boys' School, Shelbourne Street, Kenmare. If you are choosing this option, please get there early to give yourself enough time.

-Who can take part in the Pink Ribbon Walk?

The Pink Ribbon Walk is open to those of all abilities, young and old. Children under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult. And it's not just for the girls - men are welcome to take part too! Since the first Irish Pink Ribbon Walk in Kells in 2009, and subsequent annual walks in Killaloe and Kinsale since 2012 and Kenmare in 2014, many more men have joined and some enjoy running the route – all raising money for Action Breast Cancer. We request that there is at least one adult present for every two under-age walkers.

-Can I bring my dog?

The Kenmare Pink Ribbon Walk is suitable for dogs providing they are secured on a lead and in full control of their owners at all times.

Parking is available around the town with the main car park being on Railway Road.

-Is there somewhere nearby where I can stay?

Any participants who wish to stay locally the night before or the night of the walk can find accommodation information to suit every taste and budget. Kenmare is renowned for its good food and has a wide range of cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels, so why not make a day trip or weekend of it?

Kenmare always enjoys a party and we are looking forward to plenty of celebrations after the walk in Kenmare town.

-What should I wear?

THINK PINK - wear your Pink Ribbon Walk t-shirt and accessorise accordingly! Remember, there'll be a prize for the best-dressed Walker and Team! We'll also be on hand with solutions for all weather eventualities including pink rain ponchos! We do recommend sturdy walking boots and comfortable clothes though!

-What support will I be given on the route?

Pink Ribbon Walk signs will be clearly placed all the way along the route and you will be well supported and guided throughout the Walk by our Stewards. Please do listen to any advice or guidance they may offer you, as they are there to ensure you enjoy your day. To help identify participants, we ask that everyone wears their complimentary Pink Ribbon Walk t-shirt.

-What time does the Walk start?

Both the Kenmare Pink Ribbon Run and Walk will start at 2pm. We ask those that intend to run to be first at the start line. The venue will be open to the public from 11am. We ask that you arrive in plenty of time and that you are on site at least 45 minutes before your event begins - that's 1.15pm for runners and walkers. We have plenty of pre-event entertainment and a warm-up at 1pm.

A Water Station will be provided for all participants along the route. Our sponsors, The Kenmare Ice Cream and the Bias/Lynne family will have some delicious refreshments for you on your return. Feel free to carry some water and a snack with you in a backpack if you wish.
