In 2011 because of the money raised by the Pink Ribbon Walks, Action Breast Cancer was able to:
Keep breast cancer research going
There are currently four breast cancer research projects in Ireland which are funded by Action Breast Cancer.
Start the Physical Activity Programme
30 women who have recovered from breast cancer took part in a 15-week programme where they took part in running and resistance training together. Not only did they see the physical benefits but they also found themselves happier to have a new group of people to talk to and share their experiences.
Spread awareness of breast cancer through literature
Action Breast Cancer has a wide range of factsheets available to help and guide patients and families at every stage of their breast cancer journey. From diagnosis and through to living with breast cancer after treatment has finished, Action Breast Cancer can offer accurate, appropriate and up to date information. Find out more about Action Breast Cancer's range of fact sheets.
There is also an excellent booklet Understanding Cancer of the Breast for a patient or family member, providing information on diagnosis, treatment and side-effects, coping and emotions, and support resources. This booklet is part of the Irish Cancer Society’s Understanding Cancer series of booklets.
Support people who have been affected by breast cancer through the National Cancer Helpline
The National Cancer Helpline (Freefone 1800 200 700) provides advice, support and information to people concerned or affected by breast cancer. During 2009, the specialist nurses on the National Cancer Helpline provided assistance to 19,300 people. Approximately 3,000 of these calls were from women concerned or affected by breast cancer.
